If your home is in an area where snake sightings are common, you have likely walked outside to find an unwanted guest. Many people are afraid of snakes, whether or not they are venomous, and it can be difficult to remain calm when you spot these critters slithering close to your home. Here are two basic ways to keep snakes away, the latter featuring three specific methods:

  1. Chase: If you spot a snake near your home, grab the garden hose and spray it. This should urge the snake to move away rather quickly.
  2. Repel:
  • Ammonia – Snakes dislike the smell of ammonia. Soak rags in ammonia and place them in plastic, unsealed bags, leaving them around the areas where you usually find snakes. If using this method, it is best to keep pets away from the ammonia.
  • Hair – Another simple way to repel snakes is with human hair. Snakes are afraid of humans, so taking hair from your hairbrush and sprinkling it around the perimeter of your home or yard could help keep snakes away.
  • Garlic & Onions – Garlic and onions contain an acid that repels snakes. It’s the same acid that brings tears to your eyes when you’re dicing an onion. Combine chopped onions and garlic together with rock salt and scatter it around your home’s perimeter or where you see snakes the most.

If you see a snake, remember to try to take a good look at it and determine if it is venomous before chasing it away from your property. If you believe a snake is venomous, you might consider calling animal control to have it removed. Here is a resource that will help you determine whether a snake is venomous.
